Evangeline Adams, The American Astrologer
Evangeline Adams was born under a Lunar Eclipse on February 8th, 1868, and is regarded as the first major American Astrologer. She was a pioneering figure who brought Astrology into mainstream culture at a time when it was largely dismissed, and is considered to be one of the most famous Astrologers in History.
Not only did she successfully elevate Astrology from street fortune-telling into a profession of social influence and intellectual legitimacy, but she also went to court to argue on behalf of Astrology. To which she won, when Judge Freschi acquitted her, stating: “The defendant has raised Astrology to the dignity of an exact science”, officially earning her the title ‘the Godmother of Astrology.’
I’ve read her books, articles, and interviews, and it’s safe to say there are far too many stories to write in this one post, so I’ll share just some of her stories. She correctly predicted the Windsor Hotel fire in New York City in 1899, just mere days before it occurred.
Adams correctly predicted the stock market crash of 1929 and 1931 and foretold how the United States would be at war in 1942. She even canceled her own 21-night lecture tour in 1933 after she’d correctly predicted how her own death was very near. For these reasons, and many, many more, I find her to be incredibly brilliant, ahead of her time, and iconic.
Adams first discovered Astrology after sustaining an injury as a teenager and paying a visit to her Doctor. It was then, because of their conversations that day, that he encouraged her to pay a visit to a professor he knew well.
His name was Dr. J Heber Smith, professor of material medical at Boston University, who was New England’s leading diagnostician at the time. She states how he shared his study of Astrology with her on that day, casted her birth chart, and shared her past, present, and future with her in one sitting. She also shared how he mentioned eerily accurate dates and experiences no one would have any way of knowing, and even gave her insight into her future.
After carefully reviewing her chart, he informed her that she was born to be one of the world’s greatest Astrologers, and clearly, his prediction came true. He felt so confident that he left her his entire body of work, manuscripts, and years of careful research to help fuel her studies. From that point forward, Adams religiously studied Astrology, and the rest is literally history.
She later went on to counsel and provide horoscopes to some of the world’s most notable individuals: J.P. Morgan, King Edward VII of Britain, Charlie Chaplin, Seymour Cromwell, Geraldine Farrar, Lillian Russell, Eugene O’Neill, Joseph Campbell, Dr. Henry Thayer, William John Warner, Oliver James Gould, and many more. J.P. Morgan reportedly paid Adams $10,000 a year to provide him with just astrological investment advice.
She was born with her Sun in Aquarius, Moon in Leo, Ascendant in Pisces, Mercury in Pisces, Venus in Pisces, Mars in Aquarius, Jupiter in Pisces, Saturn in Sagittarius, North Node in Virgo, and South Node in Pisces.
Her Sun in Aquarius gifts her with the skillset to care for others, create a lasting legacy, and live a life of service for humanity and collective good. Her Mars appeared in the 11th House, indicating a life of leadership for collectives and generations, strong networking abilities, and intense passion to succeed.
Her 12th House Pisces Stellium made her highly adept and attuned to unseen worlds, and gifted her with intuitive depth, accuracy, and insights so profound she had no other path but to dive into the occult. Her chart rulers, Jupiter at home in Pisces and Saturn in Sagittarius, gifted her with great spiritual wisdom.
Her South Node in Pisces gifted her with intuitive and spiritual perception, while her North Node in Virgo foretold a life of service to others through advice, counsel, and communication. And lastly, her Moon in Leo inspired her to live a bold life, share her warmth, light, and passion with others, and make a career out of her authentic passions.
Evangeline noticed that every established practicing Astrologer before her was a man, and decided to be the first of her kind, altering the outdated status quo and forever transforming her area of expertise. She established herself as one of the first successful, publicly practicing Astrologers in America, and her influence has been felt ever since.
From her office in New York City's Carnegie Hall, she gave astrological readings to thousands of people. People traveled from all across the world to receive a reading and interpretation from her. Millions more tuned in to her radio show, and millions more wrote to her through letters requesting advice and asking to receive monthly or yearly horoscopes. She wrote books and appeared in countless articles and newspaper columns for years during her height.
There is seriously so much more, but it is very hard to put one person’s life into a short article.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Feel free to leave a comment and let me know if you found this interesting, and want to learn more about her, or other well-known Astrologers.
“Men and women born strongly under the influence of Aquarius live for humanity. They pour themselves out on the world, and they reap the reward which the world gives to such people...fame.” - Evangeline Adams
